A bright blue paper pond reflects foliage of jade and forest and grass green against a white sky. Hints of orange appear as a fish and manmade structures peeking out from a distance. A row of yellow, pale blue, and orange paper houses line the bottom of the artwork. Beyond treelines, puffy blue clouds stretch across the sky, with an explosion of white blossoms flowing over the right side of the piece. Two small paper buoys of red and green float on a calm blue sea, where gentle waves reflect a bright yellow sky. The Pacific coastline, highlighted in orange and yellow, weaves in and out of the bottom of the frame. A colorful cascade of green plants, orange flora, and white rocks carpet cliffs and hills of sand. In a bright expanse of white clouds and blue sky, a paraglider drifts into the distance. Orange cliffs reflect the yellow light of evening. They are broken up by blue power poles, the blue threads of electrical poles, and a blue house in the distance. One wall of a red house is set against an exuberant garden of green potted plants, paving stones, trees, wind chimes, and ornaments. The back of the artwork reveals a rough pencil sketch.

I purchased a large stack of colored paper at the tail end of 2019. When the world shut down for COVID-19, that paper suddenly became very handy to have around. With all the extra time on my hands, I spent March and April making weekly postcards of local places I visited and further places I yearned for.

I.

Japanese Tea Garden / Golden Gate Park: Just another snapshot of my lovely neighborhood. Inspired by a visit to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park a couple years back… I can’t wait to visit again when we’ve got this virus beat.

II.

17th and Ortega: One of the views from a recent neighborhood walk. I’ve always enjoyed exploring my neighborhood, but the shelter in place order has made these walks into a daily 7:30am routine.

III.

Rodeo Beach: A few weeks ago, I was introduced to the serene beauty of Rodeo Beach at sunrise. The music from the distant buoys’ bells became the inspiration for this piece.

IV.

The Dunes of Fort Ord: Most of my pieces feature San Francisco, but there are so many other places that are just as inspiring. Case in point, the colorful dunes at Fort Ord Dunes State Park.

V.

The Blue House: There’s a winding street in the hills of the Sunset district that dramatically reveals the cutest blue house.

VI.

The Hidden Garden: So many tiny leaves and blossoms and trinkets in this one… but the details were very therapeutic to work through.

This piece was built from a rough sketch. The sketch is visible from the back.
